Hi everyone. I recently signed my New Grad SWE offer for Meta. I am currently going through background check verification process and its giving me the biggest head ache and causing me more stress than the interview process itself.

So I’ve never worked for a traditional company or ever had a traditional internship completed. All the “companies” I’ve worked for are small 2-3 people company that were being ran by a friend or a mutual. Because of this, the three companies I worked for over the last 2.5 years have all never given me a proper W2 or 1099.

For company A:
I started working with a verbal agreement that once we began selling licenses for our software I would receive pay. We never ended up launching the product and I never ended up getting payed. I provided the number for the founder to HireRight and he texted me that he verified my employment dates and position to HireRight but HireRight listed it as “Not Verified - HireRight does not verify this type of request”.

For company B:
I was payed through PayPal gifted payments every two weeks. I uploaded the screenshots and paypal transaction numbers (they contain company name and my name). Thats the only thing I have to verify my payments and the PayPal 1099 will not include the company name in the form so its useless. I’ve provided the phone number for the founder, but they said it needs to be a “company phone number”… like what. It was a 3 person team, we don’t have a company phone or HR department.

For company C:
Sane case. All my payments were wired to my bank account directly. Never received a W2 or anything. I’ve uploaded all bank statements that include my name and company name, but they won’t accept those. I’ve provided contact number and I’ve been reaching out but he hasn’t been responding.

How likely is it that I am going to lose my offer? The only thing thats verified on my report is School and thats it. I passed the interviews, and have all the GitHub commits and code bases for everything I’ve worked for on my PC. I know that all the work I have done is real and I’m gonna be extremely upset if I lose my offer because a call center following their strict verification rules sends a report with a whole bunch of flags back to Meta.

Feedback/advice? Anyone else go through something similar (where you got payed basically under the table and HireRight was unable to verify). I’ve already sent an email to fbbackgroundchecks@fb.com a week ago but still haven’t heard back.

I’m interviewing for E4 too, how did downleveling work? Did your onsite go okay? Do you think if you had been slotted for E3 originally you would’ve gotten an E3 offer? I’d definitely take an E3 offer from them rather than no offer. Best of luck with the BG check, they want to hire you so I wouldn’t be super worried

IIRC, i used hireright too. They couldn’t verify something really well with my employment with my school. (Ik my case is a bit different because I’m not missing a w2, just saying it was a weird process as well) Ended up just fine, I think it will be fine unless Meta tells u otherwise and asks for more info
