I have a little over 2 YoE in my current role, and I’ll likely get a promo this year as well - putting my Tc (with the stock appreciation+bonus) at a bit under 300k. The catch here is I also only have 2 YoE. I am interested in making a career change in the next 1-2 two years (likely to another tier-1). Is it possible to get 300+ TC with this little YoE, or am I tied to my current role for the forseeable future.
There’s no such thing as golden handcuffs two years into your career. If you want to make a change, just do it. Any temporary drop in TC will be a small blip in bigger scheme of things.
I’m in the exact same boat as you.
I'm taking a 100k pay cut (if you don't include paper money) to join a startup after making nearly 300k TC, also with appreciation and refreshers at a little over 1 YoE. The opportunity to eventually become a leader in the new company and the fact that I live in a mid-low COL area made me feel that the temporarily loss in income would be worth it.
Same here. 1 YOE - 235K TC conservatively counting stocks. No one is ready to pay me these much money for 1 YOE and debating about reneging Amazon because of pay cut!
If you are getting strong mentorship and growth, I’d recommend staying, but if not, you need to position yourself where you can grow. Karma’s pay bands for junior engineers are an unsustainable bubble.
My difference is 40K counting stocks at lower price than even our current valuation, very conservatively. I am having growth, wouldn't say outstanding but still growing and really don't know how even AWS would turn out since Amazon is hit or miss. It would have been different story if I had G or F in hand.
300k at 2 YOE, wow. I suppose you're expecting 1M at 5 years, next?
I wasn’t trying to come off as arrogant or entitled - I fully realize I have gotten lucky of stock appreciation. I’m not trying to get a raise or make 1M - simply querying if given my experience, pay bands from a new company can roughly match my current TC
It really does come off as entitled. People would kill for 300k at 2 YOE. My spouse doesn't even make that much in tech at double digit YOE. To answer your question specifically, I highly doubt it unless you go to an early stage startup with crazy (on paper) equity.
If you have a good TC, it means that you have valuable skills. And you are you are young, so no matter what you do, you will be able to come back to your current TC in no time: your current company would re-hire you no question asked. My advice to young folks is always to optimize on getting a wide variety of skills and experience early in your career : that will make your profile even more valuable in the future and it is also a lot more rewarding to you: it is like travelling, you learn a lot more along the journey than if you spend your whole life in your cosy home. And keep in mind that it will be a lot more difficult to do it later down the road when your TC will be 600k and you stayed 10y in the same company.
Thanks much - a useful Point of view.
No such thing as golden handcuffs. Companies match if they want you. 300k is far from unique even. Wish I had known this earlier as I had golden handcuffs from an aqusition but google matched no prob.
Google won’t probably match (unless you absolutely blow them away in the interview) Facebook will pay... if you want to work for Facebook 🤢
Lol like apple is any better
Yeah, unlike Facebook they build productive things... you know, stuff that doesn’t sell your private information to Cambridge Analytica
