What some other jobs out there that are applicable for my skillset? I work for Epic in Technical Services (similar to a Technical Account Manager) where I am the liason for a particular application with a number of hospital clients. I assist my clients with a little bit of project management in implementations and upgrades of our Epic app. I also work on troubleshooting issues reported by my clients. I do very light development such as writing scripts and queries.

  • Epic is like how COBOL is. Hospitals who invested Billions are stuck with it and others are exploring modern EMRs.

    • McKesson is a public company with much larger market cap. They make open source EMR.

HIT is dominated by epic and Cerner. Given you might have a non compete on your contract you might not be able to join Cerner. I heard Cerner uses modern programming language in their emr but they pay like shit.

  • Why do you want to leave Epic?

    • Fair enough. I was just curious on what you were thinking? What other industries are you interested in?

I think this is the million dollar question. I really have no real passion that can translate well into a job. I guess I like “problem-solving” (which is why I applied to Epic in the first place since they advertised TS as a problem-solver). I like looking at a problem, preferably a technical one, and then try to rack my brain together to solve it. I bet you’ll say “hey, thats basically all industries”. But I just don’t know what else is out there that i can transition to other than general IT

Solutions architect if you’re willing to travel, because you worked already in client facing role and have some tech background

I'm also in Healthcare IT but have no interest in getting out. I like being part of a team working to help people rather than only working to make someone else rich. Your skills should translate well to anything IT related but I'd try to play off your specialized experience. You could do General IT in a large hospital and use your EPIC experience to stand out from the other applicants. The advice about jumping into dev before leaving Epic is also good if you want to go that route.

Reading your comments it somewhat sounds like you might like development. If so, start by transitioning to a dev role dev/sdet within Epic and then make a jump outside.
