Please help evaluate (edited with revised offer)
Current:
SDE2 (L5) AWS
TC~ 200k (140k + stocks awarded at SDE1 joining plus at promotion etc.)
YOE - 3 at Amazon, 3 before Amazon
Joined Amazon as SDE1

Offer:
Level: 62
Base: 150k
RSU: 130K over 4 years
Bonus - upto 20%
Sign on 45K (30K + 15K)
Team: C+E

Should I take it?
My objective is to get into Microsoft at L63, have asked recruiter to confirm. I am ok with minor adjustments on TC initially as long as I get in at L63.

  • “Bonus - upto 20%” implies SDE2. This is likely a L62 offer. Sorry mate.

Yes L62. Target is 10% bonus annually. 20% is like greatly exceeds at FB. Rare to get.

L62 avg stock more like 50k. Stellar performers or people the company really wants may get more. Don't set that as a standard.

Why would you want to join as 63? 62->63 and 63->64 are relatively easy promos that will earn you more $.

Heard 62 ->63 is hard? In your experience, how long does it take usually for an external hire at 62 to get to 63, and then to 64?

    Thanks for the replies.

Another factor that appears to be in favor of Microsoft is their benefits. Just considering parking, commute, toll, fitness reimbursement, and health insurance, I would easily save ~1K per month at MS. Then, there's 401K. Growth would probably be faster at MS. My org at AWS has a fleet of SDE2s who have been at this level for close to 4 years or more.

    • Nope. Stock range for 63 is 0-34k (17k target) and 64 is 0-48k (24k target). You are right about bonus.
With your experience you will easily qualify for EB2. Though it wouldn’t matter if you are from one of the high waitlist countries (India or China).

    • Getting to 63 is going to be hard even at Microsoft especially for a new hire. The only advantage you have is the on-hire stock. But your TC will drop after 4 years even if you manage to get promoted to 63 within that period.
Source: I’m a 63 with TC 200k (base 156k) and leaving for another company for a 50% bump.
