Negotiating an offer at Walmart labs for Staff DS position with 5.5 YOE 185k | 100k | 37k (base |stock refresh per year| bonus target) with 100k initial grant and 10k joining bonus. Initial grant and base salary seem on the lower side. Is this competitive in the research DS industry? Any thoughts?
If you have PhD, you can probably do better. MS or below, great offer

Good offer! Stock refresh is higher than what I remember! Base is in the middle of staff! In general though, avoid Walmart if you have other offers (former employee)

It’s not only MY experience, but what I have observed in three Walmart DS groups! From organizational perspective, Walmart is very unorganized! There are teams that don’t have clear OKRs! Some supposedly “technical” managers have business background! Some teams do duplicate works independently! ... While there are competent people there, especially in DS, they are not that strong! It varies team to team! Hope if you choose it, you end up in a good team!

I'm a little surprised that Google is unable to match this offer. Initial RSU grant is definitely subpar, but I do know this the standard refresher grant for Staff DS and may not change, bonus target is just a percentage of base, so you can only negotiate on base salary here looks like. Try to get it closer to 200k and you have a half decent offer. But there are definitely other companies in the valley that pay better than this.

@Walmart I think refresher is higher than mean of Staff DS! For Senior, it’s 40K/year and I was on the impression that for Staff, it’s close to 60 and for Principal, clese to 100! Are my numbers off?!
