Is there a way for interviewers to know for certain if someone was laid off vs being fired for some misconduct/performance issues? Given that folks who are fired might not prefer to be honest about this in interviews.

P.S, I am an interviewer and not someone getting laid off or fired (yet)

Best thing is just to say you left for better opportunities. It’s partly true, you left to find a paycheck.

Only if the interviewer knew your manager or something and talk shop. Otherwise for background check you mark do not contact and provide a copy of your paystub and that’s it.

Probably not, unless it resulted in legal repercussions and even then, still really hard to find. There’s just no public paper trail to follow. 🤷‍♂️

I do sales. I sell stuff. It’s what I do.

No. There’s no way to know. Most employers call an automated phone line that verifies employment dates and job title.. you don’t have to tell your future employer the reason or why. Just say “you’re searching for more growth”

Not usually, but if they contact your previous manager directly they might say something - tho you can usually avoid that by not providing that manager as a reference. Beyond that, most companies will verify your employment by calling all your previous employers, but generally most employers will only verify dates of employment and title, some might say whether you're eligible for rehire or not (even if you're fired you're probably still eligible for rehire).
