Have been an amazonian for >8 years now, have seen good, bad and worse managers. But right now I am seeing a complete different picture. My org is a racist org and I have seen it in the last 1.5 years already. There was this huge attrition where half of the team left last Dec and there is a knowledge gap currently. I trust and respect the leadership (I mean the VP), I was under the assumption they would embrace the remaining talent and hire more. All I see is, they are hiring micro managers from outside, who know jackshit. Their only job is to track time in form of hours to see if someone on the team is actually working or not. I was able to take the racism but unable to handle micro management after so many years at Amazon. The people they hire are new to people management, Amazon, aws but they are good in harassing ICs. I am leaving Amazon, but want to know is this happening all over the board as Amazon claims to pay more money to employees or only in my racist org. #tech #racism #aws #micromanager

  • Name and shame the org once you leave, so that other engineers don't end up there in the future by accident

Amazon / AWS wants to hire from way “outside” for its managers and prefers the first level of manager to be visa chained and willing to kick claw scratch backstab their reports in order to survive. When your managers have limited options open to them, as many of these managers do, then it’s Hunger Games gladiator survival and if they have to remorselessly burn their team then it will be done.

Hiring low talent managers in bulk and providing them only with training on how to PIP and mandating that they hit URA exit quotas so the company never has to announce layoffs and can claw back the unvested RSU packages is all part of the nano-management game at Amazon / AWS.

You asked why, that’s why but it’s unpleasant to read…. even more unpleasant to experience for the reports.

Yeah, all of that makes complete sense and no wonder they don't really care for the attrition. They know more factory people will come m join no matter what they do, people on visa just don't get a lot of options.

It used to be possible and very necessary to run a bad manager out by overwhelming the person. Once we agreed the manager had to go, everyone on the team would bombard them with escalations and not allow them to win favor with the higher ups, but now with the power of PIP we can't really accomplish the same end result.

Sad really...and ICs who knew this was a thing would make it a point to become good managers - an unexpected benefit. Gone are the days we could effect the right change in leadership. Micromanaging is so unnecessary when a manager is engaged correctly and knows what they are doing.
