I am not sure if OfferUp is doing well compared to Expedia. I recommend Expedia as you will learn a lot from existing systems.

Expedia would certainly be more stable, but you might learn more at a small company like OfferUp. The risk is that the classifieds market is crowded and those 35,000 units would be worthless if OfferUp goes belly up. Facebook Marketplace is a big threat to all of these apps like OfferUp, LetGo, Mercari, etc.

What you suggest about ebay, for starting the career?

eBay la-flame Oct 4, 2018

eBay is fine. It’s not a massive company so it’s easier to make a big impact if you’re talented. It has its fair share of issues such as politics, growth concerns, and silos within teams, but the company has a good culture and respects its employees. It’s fine to start out at but I wouldn’t stay there for more than 2 years, unless something really changes.

Work where you think you’d be happy.

Have you searched for past blind posts on offerup? There are some negative comments regarding politics at the company. Seems to be echoed on glassdoor too. Like others have said, Offerup's competitive position is precarious. If you're trying to get more experience by working at a startup, there are probably better options, although not as many in the seattle area. Also, every startup tries to sell you like they're going to go public, and your equity is going to make you rich. It's unlikely for most startups. The equity is worthless unless the company goes public or maybe if it gets acquired. Even then, they can structure it in a way where you can get screwed. The only time the equity should be a consideration with a startup is when the company is likely to go public (e.g.. Uber). Nowadays there are secondary markets to buy and sell startup equity though, so maybe it can be worth something depending on the startup.

Good work gets rewarded at Expedia

OfferUp 8uhFLY Oct 17, 2018

Good work at Expedia is rarely challenging these days, at least in my arena.

OfferUp 8uhFLY Oct 17, 2018

So depends on what you’d consider a “reward” I guess. I always play a long game.

I was in simular situation like you and I chose OfferUp and so happy for what I did.

Worked at OfferUp then went to Amazon. I regret leaving. The sign on bonus (at Amazon) isn’t worth the hostile culture. They’re a startup for sure, but I’d take it back to have flexibility in projects, my job, and enjoy the smaller things.
