I’ve been talking with google about an L6 role (edit: on the business side). I’m coming from Disney at the executive director level. The google role is lower in title, but that doesn’t concern me if the role and comp are good. And the role seems great but not the comp! i figure 232k/yr based on what HR told me: Base 150k, bonus 20%, equity 200K over four years). Am I wrong that that seems low for google? I have an offer at a smaller company for a VP level role and the TC is a good 100k higher.
232K is nothing for Google. A few years after grad can get more in Google.
Google wont match it unless its FB. This is their new policy starting about 2 yrs ago. Its happening across the board in engineering and probably everywhere else. If the competing offer is from a company that they deem lower (i think they really only respect amzn, fb, apple and ntflx), just forget about it. Just went thru this and there are many posts about it.
That’s all very helpful, thank you. I’m not sure it’s wise to take an L6 position. Another Google recruiter told me last year that I should come in at L7, but there was no appropriate role at the time. I don’t think I will even try to negotiate. I may just accept this other job.
That seems insanely low. Can you get more counter offers? Did you make the mistake of telling them your current comp? My L5 offer was 200k+ higher.
I didn’t give them any numbers. Interesting to hear that your L5 was higher, and glad to hear that my instinct seems correct. Did you take the job?
Yeah, I did. It wasn't my top offer either, but I wanted to try google.
Are you an SWE? This is closer to an L4 offer for SWE than L6. This isn't Google lowballing - your comp would be completely outside the band for L6 SWE. On the other hand, your bonus target (20%) is spot on for L6. Also, TC is 230k/year. Where'd you get the extra 2k?
I’m not a SWE; I’m on the business side.
That makes sense. Business TC is lower, most people here will assume SWE unless you mention otherwise. If you get base up by 10k, then isn't TC 242K? Also, there's usually more negotiating room on RSUs instead of base.
Since you're an executive at Disney, your blue ID badge has an 'E' on the back right? Does that get you anything extra? Lol
Parking at studio lot and gc3? Gym membership reimbursement
Yup. as an Ed at Disney you should be making more
I am making more at Disney. Hoping to get perspective on Google, not Disney.
