Moving to goole/fb early in career or get promo and stay at not so great place get promo and then move

Jan 20, 2021 6 Comments

Want to evaluate if staying somewhere where promotions are easier at the early part of the career and then moving to goog/fb is better or should I prepare to move to goog/fb as early as possible. Important considerations in this aspect for me are growth/promos/learning opportunities etc. (asking in context with sde roles)

Can experienced people on blind please guide me from their learnings. Thanks.

  • Imo better to get the promotion at goog or fb. You might get it faster elsewhere but get downleveled when you move anyway, so what's the point?

    • In many cases it's because they really didn't get the experience.

I see interviews where someone seems to have worked for bad companies with poor processes for years, gets promoted to a tech lead role that scope-wise looks like ic6, but can't pass ic5 behavioral or system design interviews. It's important to work somewhere with good support and training.

    • Thank you so much to both for the helpful insights. I’m at jpmc, I think Im not learning much and it’s too chill sometimes so I was considering if making a move the right choice.

@jpmc, you're in India. You won't even get fb London interview easily. Set some realistic expectations?
