So I already have an offer and I notified this to other company to expedite the result. The recruiter of other company asks me what the other company is offering even before revealing their own numbers.

Potential side effect of this is they will lowball me with just a offering something more than first.

How do you handle such situations?

“What the other company is offering is not relevant. Your company has a role to fill and should place a value on that role. I am ready to accept the right offer very soon. If you can’t or won’t provide an offer then my decision will be easy and it won’t be you.”

This is not a good answer. What the other company is offering *is* relevant. It's only irrelevant if you don't care about how you're compensated.

If you say this, prepare to be lowballed.

That works both ways. If your other offer is $100K then you have just put a cap on any other offers you get if you share that. If I get low balled then I know they weren’t serious to begin with. Same as if you tell them your current comp.

Not illegal anywhere. Only illegal to ask for your current comp.

I would tell them those numbers are being crunched and that you're interested in what they have to offer. If the recruiter doesn't accept that as an answer...they are being a jerk and you likely don't want to go to them anyway. It's ok to push back like that.

I would counter with "what is the pay range for the role that you are offering,. I'll let you know if there is room in that range". You also don't want to accept an offer at or near top of a range as it will affect future increases.
