Middle management in tech

I work in a big well known automotive supplier on autonomous driving systems. Pretty cool stuff. We have our own fair share of problems (biggest of which is TC) so I’m thinking of moving out to a similar management position at a better known tech. But now I’m amazed to read about middle management (M1) experience at big tech/FAANG on Blind and how shitty it is at most places! I’ve been here for 5 years and only did PIP once just because the dude was clearly not a right fit and was slacking off and constantly causing the whole team to suffer (even jeopardizing customer releases). We have no quotas or anything like that! In fact I didn’t even know PIP existed until I became really frustrated with this person and no recovery plans I discussed with him worked and asked my manager and he mentioned what PIP is. But you all talk about PIP like eating candies at Halloween! I understand politics and dealing with low performers but is this PIP culture (and quotas) a norm in tech/FAANG? Is the job of middle manager just to spot who to blame and not add any values? Or is this only the banana company? Is this an unwritten rule at tech or can I openly ask them during interviews if they have such culture? #tech #PIP #culture #management #FAANG #M1

Pip exists in all companies, but your concern is really just amazon.

    • Ok, I’m glad to hear this! Because by reading Blind I had the impression that PIP is something they teach at onboarding to M1s and is part of their goals 😂

Nah. Other companies are aggressive with performance and evals (Facebook, Netflix, etc), but amazon is the only total pip.

  • How did you even come to outlandish and sensational conclusion that it is “shitty at most places”?

Most of the PIP posts are about Amazon.

    • Maybe I shouldn’t have singled out PIP, sorry. It was just an example that really stood out. But in general I’m seeing posts about how middle managers are not adding any values and are just making their team’s life miserable
