Will U quit Microsoft for a startup like Dropbox in Seattle if you are on H-1B

Mar 15, 2017 56 Comments

Just wanted to know views and opinions on quitting a high paying salary and an amazing brand like Microsoft for Dropbox Seattle. What would you consider if you would make that move? Is it cash signing, stocks, IPO possibility, work culture, green card process etc.

You lost me at "an amazing brand".
I know Uber brand is bad right now but I still can't go by a week without interviewing someone from MS, and most of them are rejected by us anyway.

Of course, in fact I did. I quit Microsoft to join even a smaller startup before moving to Uber, all on H1B. Best decision ever, my career was rotting at MS and my only regret is I didn't leave earlier.

How is work life balance there in Uber? Any politics? Could you elaborate on what makes you happier? I am also interested in this route but other Blind posts by Uber employees worry me.

Well.. Any company with more than one employee will have politics, that's just not escapable. There was politics in my 11 person startup and there is politics at Uber. If you are talking about big company politics, then it's avoidable at Uber and definitely at a smaller scale than MS. What makes me happier is I don't feel like a cog in a wheel - I get to build features end to end, i work outside the closed ecosystem of Microsoft frameworks, I meet people who different pov, Microsoft was too inbred.

Good example of H1B affecting mobility, thereby, suppressing the wage of software engineers.

The key damage here is done by per country quota that pushes the wait for green card longer and people are forced to accept the pay adjustment. Outsourcing companies use the same delays to rotate their employees at client site.

For your future, better to go unless you plan to stay at Microsoft forever. Most requires Java and Python over C sharp and C++. Better have those skills than too late. That may limit the market value of Microsoft engineers. Sure language is similar but you are going to move and use them as main language and tools, why not start early.

agree gap. learning a language shouldnt take too long, but getting familiar with the echo system to the point we could work fast enough (not having to visit stack overflow 3x per hour) takes time.
