In 2018 I had the wisdom of getting rejected by almost all FANNG, some more than once. My current employer (not marvell) had pity on me in 2019 so they started GC process. whole year passed in this slow process and I still don't have perm approved. In this entire sad year, I kept on looking at how people got high TC, got their GC, bought home etc etc. Btw, I don't have any qualms about my TC (its goodish, partly because of stock appreciation). Sometime during my perm process, I got fed up and ended up rejecting a lowball offer from MS. Fun part: One FAANG recruiter reached out couple of months back, and I thought, sure, you rejected me twice in the past, lets make it 3. So I went through the process with absolutely no hope. Guess what, one fine day an email popped up from that recruiter with subject and email starting with Congratulations and lots of "!!!!". I think I was the first catch for that recruiter. Happy, sad, confused, I delayed my call with the recruiter and will probably have talk in the first week of jan 2020. Best part is that this new job was for a level higher than the levels I was rejected for in the past (I knew it at the interview time). Fun doubled: As if they can sniff a FAANG offer, another FAANG recruiter reached out just couple of weeks back. Icing on top is their assurance to fast track the process if HM thinks I don't need a phone screen. Sad part(s): - I am waiting for perm and then i140 approval. So, can't change jobs for next 6-9 months at least. - I cannot accept the first offer so will tell the recruiter how sorry I am for wasting their time. - Will still go over the second FAANG interview and then apologize again if I make it. This is how 2019 ended. Someone in a thread said that H1B will be the last thing to hold your aspirations, sadly, I don't agree. Someone said they don't feel any different after getting their GC, again, I don't agree, sadly. Happy new year 2020 everyone.
Fcuk the Perm, take the job. FAANG will restart perm. You don’t have a priority date, so you got nothing to lose other then the time. The higher TC and career growth in FAANG will more than make up for the lost time waiting for Perm and I-140 approval. Make the new employer do H1B transfer and you are set. Happy 2020!
Yeah I too get that feeling sometimes to take the job and start over.
Starting over Perm process is nothing, compared to starting over a missed career opportunity at FAANG. Over the course of your career, GC will give you freedom to move jobs but it’s your TC that will ultimately boost your net worth. Don’t kill your career for GC.
Why unreasonably sad though? Yes, you didn't get the jobs you wanted, but at least your GC in progress, you have a job relevant to your field, and you are getting FAANG interview experience. I am sure there are 1000s of people, right here in silicon valley, with similar education, etc., who would love to be in your shoes.
You're right. But there is another set of 1000s that I'm looking at who have what they wanted.
Take the job. If you’re Indian, you won’t get your GC without immigration reform.
,it sounds like you are new on h1b. For someone who has been on h1b (and is born in India) over a decade, this is the first of sooo mannyyy opportunities you are about to loose, you have no idea. I hope you are not born in India. If you are, then I will pray for you. Career options are EXTREMELY limited.
There are options, but being an indian and on H1B make then extremely limited.
Exactly, that's what I wrote. Bewware if you ever want to change your role or do something of your own....haha
Everyone i meet or talk to outside America now, I tell them to never come to America unless they are marrying a citizen or something. This places destroys careers. There are not going to be many more Sundar Pichai or Satya Nadellas or Vinod Khoslas any more...
You can be broda!! Keep your hopes!
Many of us want FAANG badly, don’t get it. OP can’t join, but he gets it... 😁😁 sbka time aayega 😅😊 Happy New Year!!
This one cracked me up.
Immigration law sucks, all because some hick 400 miles away can sleep better knowing that a dirty brown person won’t take a job said hick will never apply for.
Will you be on the hook for any GC costs off you were to leave for the new job?
I will be, but thats my least concern.
Out of curiosity, how much is it?
FAANGs have offices all over the world. Can't you go work in London or Toronto? I personally know an Amazonian who moved from Seattle to London due to vida issues and is loving it.
Yeah you can but my guess is (and I heard from a friend in google) that there is a long line for such transfers given the GC situation for indians.
Plus in London you don't wait over 15 years and hope to get a GC. You get permanent residence in 5 years no matter what. Doesn't matter if you're Indian or whatever....

I don’t get how ppl like this get into faang
This is unnecessarily sad and negative view of the world. As long as your application is processing you are good to go. In order for any application to be in “processing” you simply need to apply. Go accept that offer and write another sad story about how terrible FAANG is. I will wait for that with enthusiasm. Albeit the tone in my comment, seriously, all you need to continue working is a simple application (I was in a similar boat)
Agree with your views, its just that getting all documents ready for current perm was a major pain in the ass. Doing it again for a different job will be pain.
FAANG fast track GC process. When I was in Amazon it took only 4 month from kick start GC process to PERM approval. You should definitely take FAANG offer if GC is important to you.
