A friend of mine at FB got promoted to E5 and just got a normal refresher, no big grant. He even had a cliff coming up so he was pretty pissed.
I haven't yet been through PSC, so no idea how refreshers actually work. But AFAIK, you get a target amount worth of stocks every year which vest over the course of 4 years. People hit cliffs even with the refreshers ? I imagine the refresher grant per year would be way less than initial grant per year
The refreshers are fixed by level and rating. My friend took 3.5 yrs to get from E4 to E5 so his new hire grant was expiring and his refresher at promo was based on E4 so it wasn’t that much. So overall his comp is kind of low for an E5. It will go up again in a year or two of being at E5 but still sucks for him.

Well, being promoted to e5 doesn’t look exciting if you only get base and refreshers increase. Even if you get promoted in your 1st half, you’ll be still lagging behind e5 hires because of a smaller initial grant ☹️
