FB E5 vs Google L4

Nov 23, 2019 25 Comments

6yoe. FB offered E5 and Google downlevelled me to L4 (i interviewed for L5) Which one to choose?

Career progression is important for which Facebook looks lucrative but good WLB is also a priority!

For TC, Google is matching large percentage of FB's offer - so that is lesser of an issue.
At Google, if I join, would want to get promoted sooner than later. How hard is it?

Another thing to keep in mind: E5 refreshers will be way bigger than L4 refreshers. And because L4 is the terminal level, getting promoted to L5 is not a given even if you are performing at L5 for multiple years.

On the other hand, expectations for E5 will be a lot higher, and FB is not shy about managing people out in under a year.

☝️these are really good points. The higher you are, the more repercussions of failure. TC will be higher tho. Also Level 5 is sort of equivalent to manager?

E5 is also terminal at Facebook

  • FYI I’ve seen people at Google with four straight strongly exceed expectations not getting promoted from L4 to L5, claiming that they need superb rating

How hard is it then? What do they look for generally?

You're operating at the next level (technically you can be strongly exceeding in one level but not demonstrating traits needed at next level). And supportive manager. For L3-L5.

@codemonk - From what I know, those are outliers. They need to see a clear progression being made. On an average, CME - EE - SEE - SEE should present a strong case.

    • I think it is an outlier (or the person didn’t tell me everything other than SEE stuff). What I don’t like is the committee promotion structure, which takes away some politics from your manager but introduces politics at another level

You are looking at this all wrong, if TC is almost the same go to the place you feel will help you grow your skills, promotion will come when you are at a good place that can get the most out of you.

Is L4 the terminal level? I always thought it was L5 that was the terminal level?

L4 is terminal at Google now. E5 terminal at FB.

Google promotes very slowly. Even when you expect promo, you’ll probably get it the cycle after.

At google, promotions will definitely be hard to come by.
Your decision will depend on how much exactly you value wlb vs career progression.
For me it's simple, to give up wlb, I will need to see a significant difference in pay.
Likewise you need to find that equation for yourself. And no one else can make that call for you.
