FB M2 vs M1

I am sure there are 20 other threads like this, but I'm unable to find a relevant response. Does anyone know how fb decides between M1 and M2 levels? Should I be talking about specific things when sharing examples that will help with M2 leveling? Yoe:16 TC:380

Given that TC you're probably not going to get M2

M2 pays more?

M1 is around 500k

Current level & location at Amazon?

Amazon fbM2 OP Oct 1, 2019

Seattle, L7. TC is adjusted to the decline in stock price.

Very rough - there coukd be always special circumstances Managing < 25 people => M1 >25 and <50 people for 3+ years => M1/M2 based on interview and references >50 and <80 people for 3+ years = M2 >80 = M2/D1 Experience at lower tier companies is discounted. Managing contractors/offshore does not count. Managing big team for short period of time does not count. For interview, expectation is that M2 developed principles and can generalize individual cases and Apple them to org. Example - asked about developing sr engineers, M1 can talk on how he personally coach them etc, M2 is expected to answer on how he built org processes to support developing sr engineers.

What is an example of Getting M2 outside of lower tier company? What you said above - is it an unspoken rule or you are just guessing. Not many people want to join as M2 after managing 50people at google I am sure

This is good to know. However, in my loop, all of them were M2's and all had less than 35 in their org

M2 is a senior manager whose roll-up reports are usually over 30. You are also a manger of managers. M2 requires additional rounds like EM retrospective. Given you're a L7 at Amazon, getting a M2 offer is up leveling which I don't think it's happening. ICs are doable. Like L6 at Google is hired as E7 at FB. But EMs are quite different. More conservative. I saw a recent M2 hire who was reporting to a VP at Uber.

I feel like leveling get fuzzy at higher levels. In my recent rounds of interviews for Engineering Management, I came in at VP for smaller company (org of 60), L68 at MSFT (org of 45), L7 at Google, and M1 at FB. Big disclaimer is that I'm on the East Coast, so the dynamic is a bit different.

Are you saying you had an interview round to manage 60+ people ? What’s your previous experience?

Facebook jIhC24 Oct 2, 2019

TC 380 will not be M2 at FB

Amazon fbM2 OP Oct 2, 2019

Thanks for the responses. Also, the ones using TC to judge, your opinion isn't that useful. I expect to be in the edge given I have been managing managers for 2-3 years.

Facebook Gkurhhd Oct 2, 2019

How many managers and total reports in chain do you have?

Amazon fbM2 OP Oct 2, 2019

Currently at 3 managers. Team size is 30+

Can you ask for a M2 interview panel regardless? I make 650k at Netflix as a EM, I don’t think m1 can match that. But I really like Facebook. What should I do

Facebook delete[] Jan 25, 2020

Why not. Ask for M2 loop. Right. At 650K, M1 is not easy to match but lower for M2. Do you do a similar M2 role in Netflix? One of the key difference is you need to show your experience of managing of managers.

Netflix m2material Jan 25, 2020

I managed managers before. At Netflix we don’t have SEM roles at all(no matter what people put on LinkedIn), EM->director. Nobody manages other managers
