Interviewed for fb and their base salary was 20% lower than what I'm making now. The interviewer said she's not flexible on base, but there's room to negotiate the 23k over 4 years Sound right? What should I counter with? Location is Seattle office
I am having the exact opposite situation. What level were you offered? What do you mean by 12k / 4y?
Those were for the stock options - 23k vested over 4 years (sorry- typo on the original post). I'm not sure what the position level is, I'll have to ask. I'll be interviewing in person soon, but that's the comp info I was given at the end of the 2nd phone interview. Wish I was in your position!
FB doesn't give options dude lol
You don't mean 23k dollars over 4 years right? People usually use dollar amount when talking stock comp. Is this also for PM? You'll need to list total comp for people to be able to help but if you're not a swe I don't know enough to help.
It's for a product specialist role. Base offer was $105 (way lower than I thought) with 10% bonus & 23k vested over 4 years" and 100% medical. No sign bonus. She said the only thing she's flexible on is the 23k
Ask them to match your total comp? Doesn't matter how much lower base is if the TC is within 5%.
Ok cool - good to know it has legit value (and potential future value). But living in Seattle on 105 base seems really tough to do...
You won't have to worry about food and laundry; since you're on blind, you've probably seen crazy comp numbers, do note that they're mostly for engineering roles and don't apply company wide. That said, you have the most negotiating power right now before you join.
Good advice and a good reminder @sum41pwd ....btw is that like Sum41 the popular early 2000s canadian rock band??
Well the better question is, is it better than your other options.
That's a great question to ask. But no, it's far below my market TC range. Guess that's what I needed to hear myself say
Unfortunately Product specialists don’t have the greatest package. Most of them use this as a path to come to Facebook and many of them transition to TPM or PM role depending on their interest within couple of years. At that point of time your comp will be adjusted. You don’t get the awesome initial grant that you get when you straight come in as a PM which you have to accept it. Everyone is lower than what Eng gets because that’s the market so never compare your comp to a eng comp.
Also many of them are hired from good colleges from a non- comp sci back ground
Great to know! It'd be great to work there- especially getting in on the initial team in the Seattle office...but I think this position would be too huge a step back for me...maybe I should ask the recruiter if there are any other roles I might be a good fit for? Something more comparable to my current salary?
You'll have to interview again for other roles as far as I know. If you don't mind what's your TC now?
Current TC is 135 but have an offer from another company for 149
Are you fucking serious? What are you hesitating for? It's Facebook - they could offer me 60k and I'd take it
If I were single I prolly would
Product specialist is a really shitty role there and the people that have that job, hate it. Let’s say that there are about 120 product specialists, while I was there (for 2 years) I saw 5 of them make PM... and literally everyone wanted to make PM. It’s extremely competitive to make that jump. I wouldn’t do it if I were you.
Thanks for the advice - I'm inclined to agree with you. The more I learn here, the less appealing this is becoming
Company brand matters if you don't have any, but what you do and experience matters just as much if not more. Ask to interview for a different role.
Ask what level this is? E4 or E5
Good call- I messaged the recruiter asking this and will update the post when she gets back to me
Product Specialists are usually IC2 or IC3. They are fairly junior roles.
