FB WLB? Data Scientist IC5 interview coming up, but wife is pregnant with our first and I'm worried about WLB.

Haven't worked at FAANG before but am in the interview process at FB for IC5 data scientist. My wife and I are expecting our first child in April of next year so that will be my main priority. The FB IC5 potential pay bump is attractive (especially with a kid on the way) but I don't want to be grinding 50+ hrs while trying to take care and bond with my newborn. Any FB DS folks willing to comment on WLB? Assuming IC5 is more stressful than IC4? YOE: 7 + masters TC: $200k

Do you know this from past experience?

Congrats! Go for it, WLB is very team dependent. Also since IC5 is a terminal band, you can take it easy for a couple of years and settle with MA

Thanks! Assuming I progress through the process how would you recommend assessing and selecting teams for WLB?

What does terminal band mean ?

If newborn is your top priority, then stay where you are right now. Changing an employer in this situation will add to your stress. BTW, DS in Facebook is a joke. It is equivalent to Data Analyst elsewhere.

Agree, except for waiting to jump. You will have months to go through boot camp and ramp up, you can make it clear up front to your manager during team matching that you will want to take leave, and even if manager doesn't like it they cannot really discriminate too much. Basically all will be forgiven after your first year anyway, and they wouldn't try to get rid of you that fast.

Floate are you saying every SWE can coast year1?

Depends on the person and, to a lesser extent, the team. I work 40 hrs/week but know others who do 50/60. ML heavy roles tend to have worse WLB
