I first joined FB because it was a smaller company, and a place where bs didn’t really fly. Recently, I’ve noticed not only a much larger degree of politics resulting in decision paralysis, but also inept directors and VP’s continually surviving failure after failure. As in any larger company, there at least appears to be a separate standard for engineers and low level managers than directors and VP’s, many of whom act like and are treated like tenured professors. It’s a shame, as I think core FB culture is so good for innovation and employee happiness.
What are some of the projects that have failed?
Yep. I still think it's good compared to any place that micromanages. How I get things done is still largely up to myself. The politics is becoming palpable. And numerous middle managers that don't push for big changes, they're just there to survive.
Don't forget B8 last year. I'm not arguing your point, but it's not all gone to hell yet.

I don't get why they need to hire more people and become *big* if there is already politics going on for good work.
Don't think any of us said politics was for good work. That it exists and jostles for better reviews and maintaining status quo. That doesn't mean there isn't expanding scope leadership wants to take on. Some parts of the company will do hard things and start brand new initiatives. Others are expanding in what already works as demand grows from customers (internal/external/users/advertisers). Plenty of reasons to grow the company in size.
