I ve accepted an M1 role at FB and I just had baby. I spoke to my potential team and told them I will be on my paternity leave in the current company till first week of April and then join.

The HM is saying that it would be ideal if I join end of Feb or so as I can sit in on the feedback delivery to my team by the current manager.
I don't want to give up on a whole month of my paternity just for this.

1.What do FB ppl think here?
2.How important is this that the HM wants me to come earlier?
3. How do M1s joining after PSC(after March) keep up with PSC for next year?

Tell them you can do that as long as you get to go on leave with FB later.

Damn - this explains why people complain about FB WLB. I am assuming you are not team matched yet? How are they ready to wait for 6 months if you are team matched already?

Team matched. HM keeps saying that I'm the perfect candidate and make this exclusive and willing to wait for me

Are you in hardware? Or some special field like AR/VR or AI/machine learning? Can’t imagine they would wait for a generalist for that long

  • Possibly explain the situation then ask if you can get some kind of paid leave for the time you are sitting on monitoring calibrations or ask them to add a bonus. It won’t be an entire month, it will be a few meetings. Calibrations themselves are maybe 2-3 days, and then another few days to organize the feedback (though you won’t have to do that/be a part of that) plus one hour for each 1:1. Being able to shadow someone for calibrations will be invaluable. I’m sure there’s a way to only attend calibrations and make up lost days retroactively, so you can get your break. OR at FB pat leave doesn’t have to be taken in one chunk. Maybe you could tap into the FB Pat leave and then get even more time with your family. Having said all that, family first and you’re making the right priority to consider them over the request of a manager IMO.

Thanks for your response. Calibrations are in Jan and feedback delivery is in Feb. I would be missing the calibrations anyway. This is just the feedback delivery. Is feedback delivery that important that I have to to thin about this?

    • Disclaimer- I am not a manger but if all you’re doing is shadowing 1:1s, I feel like you could get some kind of a debrief once you onboard on the process and decision making, how to frame feedback. plus consider sitting in and shadowing some future feedback sessions during the next round of calibrations, and then put your 1:1s during the later half of the feedback session so you can learn and immediately implement which might actually make you retain the information better than sitting in on a session now then not needing to implement what you learn until a year later. If you’re coming in after Jan, you won’t have to worry about it for another year. I would suggest spending part of your ramp up time learning more about the process once you start late (assuming you take that path). They are such a big deal and so much of your teams growth relies on how you represent them and make a case for them. I’ve opted to not take on specific really interesting role switches because I’ve felt id be going to a manager without enough political clout to get my projects aligned on or make a good case for my work to their peers.

Sounds like a bad manager if they are asking you to cut your leave short

He is just doing what's right for his team. I really enjoyed my conversations with him
But yeah, I don't think it's going to work out if I have to cut short my leave.
