Tech companies love racial and gender diversity but neglect the age diversity. Why are there so few old tech workers at tech companies? https://www.statista.com/statistics/653789/average-age-of-tech-company-employees/
Very simple answer: Most of the old folks don't want to get out of their comfort zone, they ended up using the same technologies for years While fresh grad or new folks start with latest technology stack by default, so they always have an advantage point Also, old folks have families, so they don't want to spend time doing LC
You mean Python, Go, NoSql, Spark, ReactJS, etc are the latest technology? Aren't these actually much easier to learn and use than the old C and C++?
You’ll find most older tech workers working in the .NET / traditional MS environments and working on enterprise software. They are all over the place when you look outside of the west coast tech scene.
This data doesn’t seem accurate, at least it’s off by years for FB and G.
There are more people studying CS now than ever before, so inevitably there will be more younger engineers entering the companies and moving the median down. That said, I do believe there is ageism in SV.
Because this graph shows median age of the company as a whole and not SDE specifically within those companies.
Updated the title to include PMs and others.
Doesnt matter when the poll is now skewed and wrong.
The option listed as "very few Gen X or baby boomers took CS" is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Who do you think made this industry? Did comp sci just come into existence when 90s kids (me included) just started taking CS?
Yes, prior to the mid 90s most schools did not have computer science depetments at all. The people who made this industry are older - but they were a relatively small group of people doing something that had not become mainstream for people of their generation.
CS was created by older gen but it was part of math program back then. When CS degree was created, it was not as popular as it is now. Just check the number of CS program enrollment year by year and you will see a line going straight up.
The cycle will repeat for the next gen of young engineers
Hmm. I question this. A lot of old timers at nvidia. And, AOL, with youngest hires? Lol the irony
I didn’t even know AOL still existed
Where's the data from?
Are these surveys self-reported? Unless these results are based of DOBs on govt-issued ID, can't trust the veracity of the data.

Tipping culture is really getting out of control! Waiter gave me ‘a look’ because I tipped her 10% for ‘BAD service!’
Its coz its hard to leetcode if u have kids and family commitments.
You only need to squeeze half of an hour a day to leetcode one question a day. 365 days => 365 leetcode questions => be able to pass technical interview at majority of the tech companies. The question is after clearing technical interview, whether you can get an offer despite of the age.
Obviously, they get into CS before kids
