FB new hire equipment selection
Accepted my FB M1 PE MGR role - looking at the equipment selection, and it doesn't mention OS. For the Lenovo laptops, are these running linux / can I run linux on these? I'd prefer linux, though would use macos over windows. #facebook #facebookengineeringmanager
You can run Linux on laptop but expect to triubleshoot problems as only few people use Linux and IT support is partial - eg help desk will have no idea how to renew certificate if something goes wrong on Linux while they can debug Mac with closed eyes. On the other hand community exist so somebody will help you outs if you post in group.
Your biggest pain as manager will be probably lack of Keynote on Linux
Thanks this is quite useful - after being at MS and previously Google I've become used to using the web based slide tools.
Can’t speak for engineering, but I was not given the option to choose OS. ThinkPads are running Windows 10 and MacBooks are running MacOS. But it does look like you’ll able to provision a common enterprise distro of Linux on PC once you’ve onboarded.
