Got an offer with FB. Now, considering which office to choose, Seattle or MPK. Below is my observation. Seatlle: - Pros: no state tax(10%), low price housing, near downtown (within 30 min) - Cons: 9 months cloudy weather with intermittent rains, less FB teams Bay area: - Cover almost FB teams, more opportunity (start-up companies and other big companies), always sunny days, - with state tax, amazing housing price, far away from downtown (1 hour) Could anyone give some of your advice or observations? Thanks you. Update: 1. The TC in two offices is the same. 2. I prefer infra, ML, application-oriented work.
9 month of cloudy weather in Seattle is a myth, whereas +30% TC is not. It‘s gloomy about 5 days a week starting late Oct till early April and drizzles occasionally. No precipitation at all mid Jun-mid Sept.
Tons of interesting teams in Seattle, new teams are emerging every quarter. FB plans to expand further in Bellevue, search Workplace for the numbers.
Bay Area : Great Vada Pau,Misal Pau,Pau Bhaji Seattle : Samosa but no sweet chatni. Ab bhuke ho to Bay area aao.
But desi nahi ho toh Kya Kare?
Chicken Tikka Masala with breadNaan ,available in same gravy both places.
MPK is one hour away from downtown of San Jose on a good day. The office is in the middle of nowhere, but you get a much broader choice of teams and projects to work on. Sure, there is the state tax and cost of living is higher, but if you get the right set of projects under your belt and work with the right people, DEs will cover the costs. Seattle, I’ve heard, is better on WLB, but what you can work on is fairly limited, and is mostly infra, some of ads, and bunch of integrity work.
How are infra teams regarded in FB.. in other words, what are the "hottest" teams to work for in FB?
I don’t know as I don’t work there. Given that performance evaluation is every six months I assume you’d want something impactful shipped at the same interval. I’m not sure how much of this you can do in infrastructure unless you’re at a higher level pursuing your multi year project.
You didn’t state where you are currently located. If you prefer smaller towns, then Seattle is easier to acclimate to. Don’t worry too much about the weather, some end up liking it (I still can’t decide after 1.5 years). I’d lean towards MPK only because it’s HQ. Might be worth starting there, and flying up to SEA regularly to check it out. Of course you could always do the opposite. Your choices will also be limited to your boot camp experience, I think.
I always thought people in HQ enjoy more benefits compared to people in other campuses.
Cloudy weather is depressing
