FB vs Plaid internship

Given the opportunity to intern at both companies, would it be dumb for me to go with the Plaid internship over Facebook? Facebook has higher prestige and better comp for interns (and new grads), but Plaid still pays well enough to live. I think Facebook would open more doors compared to Plaid, but Plaid gives people the opportunity to work remotely. I'm from Canada and would like to stay here, so I'd want to work at Plaid for a year or two (assuming I get a return offer) and then move back to Canada and hopefully work remotely. Any thoughts at all would be appreciated, thanks.

TL;DR, yes, it would be dumb.

Forget the companies. Why would you ever take a remote internship??? An internship is your chance to learn from people with skills you want. How much do you think you will pick up in a few VC calls a week? Even if you decide to take Plaid, you will miss out if you do the internship remotely. And yes it would be dumb to take plaid over FB.

I think OP meant working remotely once they begin full time. They noted that they’ll want to return to Canada after one year.

You could always do FB for a year or two and then return to Plaid for remote work?

I don't think it's dumb if you value staying in Canada. Do you know how likely it is to get a return offer from both companies? How confident are you in receiving a return offer considering that likelihood? If you get a return offer from Plaid, are you guaranteed remote work?

It depends what you want to get out of an internship. Make your decision based on that and which opportunity will best provide that for you. I think Plaid would be interesting because you'd learn about remote culture and how to work on those teams. If that is important, go with Plaid.

Take the FB internship. Look for a remote or local gig in 1-2 years. You don’t have to work at Plad now to work there later. You don’t have to work at Plad to work remote.

Hey, I'm an engineer at Plaid and I help run the summer internship program at Plaid. As you know, Facebook and Plaid are very different companies; if you’re set on a certain company size or problem space, you should pursue that. Of note: the argument of “you can always work there later” (which shows up a lot in this thread) is flawed; Plaid right now is a startup on a very steep but also higher variance path than Facebook, and both the risk and upside profiles (both in terms of money and in terms of career growth and impact) will change more quickly over the coming years than they would at Facebook. Our comp is definitely competitive, even against public tech companies. If you have any questions about Plaid or our internship and want to chat, please DM me!
