Posting since this is the third announcement of a low performer in my org leaving to work at Google. In prior years, I’ve always seeing high performers with valuable skill going to Google, makes me wonder if their hiring bar has dropped. Now the strong contributors are leaving to startups or crypto companies. Calling them a low performer not just based on their work performance but skill, knowledge, resourcefulness and ability to successfully work with others.

      Edit: Sorry, I didn’t realize you were a different @amazon and not OP.

      Google peaked because folks you thought didn’t perform well on your team went there?

      Downlevel, lowball is a real concern but your inference based on your perception of your team mates and their decision makes no sense. It just appears salty.

      I hope you, and your team mates have amazing time at next role, irrespective of Google or startups.

      @OP Maybe their performance dropped as they were busy preparing for Google

  • People who succeed at Amazon are a different kind of person than ones who succeed at Google. Maybe the poor performers were just a bad fit.

      It could be a motivation problem too, maybe they did not like their team or manager or they got paid very low, bad bonus. Its tough and illogical to push out high quality code if the company is mistreating them. Would they want Amazon to succeed or fail?

      Agree with Meta, i have seen so many top performers who decided to coast and give up because of toxicity in orgs.

    I am leaving for Google too. And for the last 4-5 months i am the low performer of my team. But from the technical stand point I am better then 4 out of 6 people in my team. I have better knowledge in AWS, Java, system design, and I am much more resourceful that other people are still pinging me with questions that are trivial to me but they struggle a day or two. I still deliver my projects and even deliver early and pick up things from other people's plates.

    Here is why I am a low performer;

    1) i am preparing for interviews while dealing with a difficult health and immigration related situations. Literally working 3 or 4 hours in a day including meetings

    2) metrics to measure success doesn't apply to me

    3) my team kept changing my focus areas. Every sprint I was given a different project and had my work thrown away so i couldn't get to deliver for straight 4 months. Which actually the reason I am leaving.

    4) culture in my team makes me stressful and worries that effects my performance

    Is this helping?

      Thanks guys. The reason I didn't piped was, i guess, i always deliver my work before the deadline and team is out of devs. There were 6 people when I joined and they all left so turn over is too high in our team. They can afford to lose people even tho they are low performers like me.

  • Interview is a skill, not about your performance at work. Otherwise no company has great talent. For those who got Google offer and performed really well at old companies, most likely they will get counter offer

    May be they were preparing for Interviews hence the low performer, or did not like Amazon and hence low performer? World is big dude.
