I see on Google's career site that some roles allow remote work. I also know that getting hired requires team matching. I am trying to figure out if it is worth applying. Does google's culture accept remote work? How many teams would hire a remote L6?

  • I talked to a recruiter a few days ago. He said that Google really values onsite collaboration and will require some time in office. He said that while there are some fully remote options, they are few and far between. Generally speaking, those roles are for highly qualified candidates with specific skill sets needed for that role. My takeaway was that most positions are still expected to be at least partially in office eventually.

I haven’t talked to my recruiter about it yet so no bad information, but I appreciate the offer to help! I’m expecting to be around an L4 so doesn’t seem like a remote option may be allowed for me

Yeah that’d be correct. FWIW once you’re 5 it’s not hard at all to get approved for fully remote.

I teammatched with a remote team and currently have an offer. It's the same process as regular teammatching. I didn't originally seek out a remote team, it just happened by pure chance.

  • It is possible. I am in team matching for remote L5 now. Recruiter offered me nearly a dozen teams to meet with who were remote-friendly. I had already passed HC though before match which I think is unusual and maybe made it easier to connect with teams.

Of the teams I met with I did confirm with each HM they were ok with remote and what their plans were for including me after RTO.

One of the job descriptions I was given said Staff SWE which I think means it was L5/L6 role.

Thanks for the info! At Google, "Staff" means L6.

Most new hires or lower level are not going to be approved for remote. The request process internally for remote if a pain in the ass, even for approved orgs. It goes to DIE committee and everything, and if you want to move remote locations, you need to request it all over again. My experience in Cloud.

Diversity, Inclusion, Equity. They call it DEI, but it's where competence goes to die at the altar of diversity goals.
