Are Data engineers paid lower salaries?

Oct 17, 2018 10 Comments

About to get an offer from a late stage startup. The title says Sr data engineer. Can I expect the pay to be on par with Sr swe? Just want to have the right idea during negotiations. I'm currently a Sr swe and mostly work with distributed data processing systems. I've been told I'd be helping build out the data infrastructure

If it is true, can someone explain why? I was under the assumption that anything data / stats is in demand compared to the sea of general SWEs that exist.

I think it depends on what you’d actually be doing. data engineer / scientist are leaky abstractions right now and cover a lot of different things. at FB data scientists are basically more empowered data analysts. data engineers do a lot of SQL. but if you’re more a SWE who sometimes does data infra and still codes a lot and knows how to build distributed data systems, you can command a premium

some companies pay them the same, others don’t. at FB data engineers and data scientists get ~60% of SWE equity

I've heard so, but because you were sde before, maybe not. I wouldn't accept lower pay for the job function you described.
