Very poor experience with the HR. Was offered a job verbally and asked for reference. I told her that I needed sometime to get the reference and to have the conversation with my current manager. However, one day after I supplied the reference, she told me that they are going with another finalist and said that I should learn a lesson to never provide a reference with my current manager when there is no written offer. Thank so much for teaching me a life lesson. I had no idea about this other finalist the entire time we were talking. I can’t believe HR just f**k me over like this. Don’t bother with this company. Ridiculous and unprofessional recruiting process. What a waste of my time.

A verbal offer is not an offer

That’s not true. I had the conversation with my manager and my manager was happy to give me a good reference. We have a good relationship, otherwise, I wouldn’t have asked her. In fact I told the recruiter that I needed some lead time to talk to my manager. So she knows all this time and still decided to not tell me that they are going with another candidate until I went through the trouble to line up my reference. Also she literally won’t had the time to contact my manager because they rescinded the offer the day after I gave her reference.

Well honestly it’s not surprising, it happened to me too but I was considering 2 positions at the time, and before I even talked to one of the managers their role was filled the next week, so naturally I picked whatever that’s left. That’s why I wouldn’t tell my current company if I’m leaving unless it’s set in stone. I’d use any reference that’s not my current team. If Asana won’t be happy with it, then bye bye lol. Honestly who ask for reference anymore…

It’s not about the reference at all. Because the day after I gave the reference, she called me to rescind the offer. I have a good relationship with my manager and I know that she will never bad mouth me. It’s about how unprofessional their HR team is. She didn’t share about the other finalist the entire time and we were literally talking about the comp and salary negotiation just two days before she called me to deliver the bad news. I am just as confused as all of you about what happened and why they are so chaotic.

Clueless in what way Oracle? Like doesn't understand product's role? Or how product teams operate? I am assuming it's not that he doesn't know coding

    Jesus sorry to hear that.

This may be petty but in this scenario I would think about 2 options to deal with this:

    1) reach out directly to the hiring manager
    2) social media call out on LinkedIn against Asana. Something to the tune of it's a candidates market bla bla bla, but you were extremely disappointed to see recruiters act a certain way.

Most likely Asana's LinkedIn team will notice and get back to you.

Only do the second if you're ok with announcing publicly you're applying for new roles.

What I don’t understand is that if you are not interested, why pushing me to give you references and then screw me over this way. Sorry for the vent, but is this normal now? I didn’t anticipate this kind of behavior from a relatively established company.

There is always a chance it could fall through. Nothing is done until you signed. Candidates bail after accepting all of the time, it’s a two way street.

You weren’t screwed, this is how it goes sometimes
