Uber vs Google

From my point of view, it seems Google is better positioned to launch a self driving taxi service than Uber is to take on Google in a market segment they mastered a decade ago.

I'm going to have to disagree with the general sentiment here. I think Uber is much better positioned. They have a whole fleet of cars that they can collect data on rather than Googles comparably small fleet of selfdriving cars. Meanwhile Google would have to build a ride hailing service that spans the globe while Uber has to develop the selfdriving car. I'm much more confidant that with this talent Uber poached they can create the technology. Much less confidant in Google being able to create a business.

Feel free to discuss, would love to hear differing opinions, just explain why :)

Nicely done. When people use logic and data, the answer, independent of how surprising it might be, is still the correct one.

With the speed of engineering at Google, they will have something in 10 years and then in beta for another 10

My analysis tells me the Uber car and mapping will be crap (or a fucking pile of fucking shit for the Uber bros to understand).

Mapping is hard man. Ask Microsoft or Here or Apple They are no where near to what google has.

    • I do understand mapping is hard, certainly. But uber has been very aggressive at cobbling together a talented mapping group - between hiring guys like Brian McClendon, acquiring most of Bing maps, etc it's obvious to me they take it serious.
