Hi all, I just received an offer from Facebook as an E4 candidate for an Android dev role. I have 9 years of experience overall but 1.5 yrs of Android dev experience. Can anyone provide insights on this offer ? 150k base 0 signing bonus 220k equity over 4 years I’m in the process of negotiation but I am also considering potentially declining for an alternate offer with a higher base/signing bonus as a Senior Engineer and reapplying as an E5 at Facebook in a couple of years. Any insights would be great - thank you!
I don’t think declining just to re-interview in the future in hopes of a E5 offer is a good idea. You’re likely to get a promo, refreshers and stock appreciation in those “couple of years” if you sign with FB now. You’ll also be missing out on perks, really smart/great colleagues and FB specific knowledge that you’ll need to ramp up on anyway when/if you do make it in as an E5.
Wondering how does the refresher look like every year for someone meets the expectation ?
Differs per level, around $70k based on self reported info.
Surprised that you did not get joining bonus.
Yea, for Boston, the recruiter says a signing bonus is only applicable for candidates that are relocating
Just completed my compensation talks with them and they were pretty resistant on the SOB front for the Boston office.
Equity seems low. If you got about 350k then it would be more in line.
I second the opinion that you shouldn't decline and re-interview for E5 in a couple years. Why not accept, kick ass, get a good performance rating, and get promoted? If you want to come here, then come here. Don't kill yourself in the level. Worry about whether the comp makes sense.
Err. Don't kill yourself worrying about level...
You can probably get a signing bonus if you push hard enough
If you’re ready for E5 you’ll get promoted in 6 months
Makes it sounds like the promotion process is a joke then.
Yea, let’s be realistic. Considering rampup, from what I’ve been told, a rockstar would get a promo in a year at E4
You would be better off taking the offer and excelling at E4. Then get promoted. You may not get an offer in a couple years or still be offered E4 in two years.
You are probably being given E4 because it’s an android DEV role and understandably it’s really tough to perform at E5 with 1.5 years of experience. I would also recommend that you join now instead of reapplying in a couple years. You should leverage your other offer to negotiate hard and get a good increase on the offer. With your rich experience and skills, you can do well and get promoted to E5 very soon (<2 years). Waiting wouldn’t help since you will miss out on FB specific experience and learning, as well as $$$ from stock price appreciation. It also depends on the other offer though- if it’s google and giving you L5, by all means take that instead.

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
That sounds great for an E4 in Boston (I know their offers are same across NA). E5 should be more achievable but if you didn't interview at that bar then they won't give it to you. The signing bonus should be negotiable up to 25-50k.
Thanks for the input!
