Hi there,

How much opportunity is there to do engineering related work in the FB DS product role? I know it's heavily focused on analytics / product management, but is there any opportunity to build software either - libraries for analysis / putting models into production, data engineering pipelines, etc.? I'm guessing that type of thing might be frowned upon because "SWE do it better". My background is more focused on ML Eng (with some analytics), although my current title is DS.

Thanks!

  • DS product roles are simply Business Intelligence++ roles. Will be very hard to switch to SWE role.

  • Modelling is often limited to prototyping, but in new teams I have seen DS build prod models too. Other than that engineering is very limited to building pipelines (if no DE available) and building small reusable Analytics modules at most. So yes it is possible to some extent and Facebook is still a company where individuals can define their own role/scope *as long as they have impact* (so you gotta have a good reason for doing it) and the average DS does not do it so its hard to calibrate against for your manager.

Thanks! Any thoughts on switching to SWE from DS within FB? I'm assuming you have to go through the whole interview process anyway.

    • Yes I think most of it. There used to be a simplified process not sure if that still exists. I would try and go for a SWE role directly if that's what you wanna do. Also you might not get your RSU changed when changing roles.
