There’s a good amount of data points on Levels for Facebook where years at company/YOE is like 4/4, 5/5, 6/6 (even one with 3/3) for the E6 role. How much of an outlier are these progressions? I would’ve thought TC for internal promos starting at FB from E3 all the way up to E6 would be lagging behind external hires at upper levels, but a lot of these data points are right around the overall average E6 TC on Levels. If someone gets to E6 after 5 years of starting at E3 out of undergrad, their initial stock grant (which would not be much compared to the TC at that point anyways) would have been finished by then. Are these guys just continuously getting mostly GE rating refreshers and riding stock appreciation? YOE: 0 (past fb intern) TC: -tuition cost
I went from e3 to e6 in about 2.5 years. Yeah director gave me extra grants to catch up. After stock appreciation make around 850 which is the normal range
Well that sounds very impressive lol. Is additional equity granted in cases like yours? I thought AE was a director level decision and would be hard to get unless you were already at E6+ or something already.
Congrats! 850k is way above the normal range for E6, it’s E7 comp. E6 normally tops out around 600 without stock appreciation. AE is hard to get and never guaranteed, but it’s a retention tool and people like this that reach E6 in 2.5y are the type of people the company wants to retain :)
Remember that most people never reach E6 at all (~10% of eng). going from E3 to E6 in 5 years is quite rare, but top performers can do so. Such people usually get GE+, and so have good refreshers. With stock appreciation, it’s not unreasonable to get to a good TC after promotion. Doing this in 3 years is extraordinarily rare. I do know of two people that did this, but requires not only skill but a ton of luck to be at the right place, at the right time and all the stars to align for a couple years (ie they start working on something that then somehow becomes an org priority). These rare birds are good candidates to get awarded Additional Equity from their director/VP, and so their TC is either very good or goes even over the normal band.
