Facebook L4 or Google L3?

Recently got offers from both Facebook @ L4 and Google @ L3 (NYC office for both), and trying to decide which one to take. On paper, Facebook looks better, but most of my developer friends think I'd be happier at Google. Wondering if anyone has experience at both that could give a perspective. Facebook: $150 Base, 240K over 4 years, 0 sign-on Google: $135 Base, 260K over 4 years, 20K sign-on Google recruiter claims they are matching Facebook's offer because of almost-guaranteed minimum 15% annual performance, and says that this is the max they can offer me @ E3. I can probably negotiate a sign-on with Facebook as well. I also haven't team matched yet. Facebook benefits also seem to be much better: 21 days of PTO versus 15 at Google (I know they grow after 3 years but that seems a long way off), $3K childcare reimbursement, gym reimbursement. The other think I noted was that they seem way more diverse, at Google I didn't meet any female engineers at all. The bootcamp seems like a much better route to getting matched to a team than Google's process. The benefits of Google would be that they have a bigger NYC office so more projects to work on and a bigger office, I know several people that work there and are very happy. I've heard they are more engineer-centered versus FB being more product-centered, and I definitely find product-centered culture to be much more stressful to work in. I also just got a puppy so being able to bring her to the office would be very convenient. Also I've heard work life balance is better than at Facebook, but I guess that also depends on your team and so far the team matching process seems kinda opaque to me. Are there are any secret perks of Google that I am missing? The benefits package seems very standard which makes me wonder why they is so much hype around working there - free food is pretty typical in tech these days, the healthcare seems quite standard on paper, the maternity leave is only slightly more than facebook, the PTO seems really low when you're starting out (I love travelling and my entire extended family lives a 10 hour flight away so I guess maybe I'm just more sensitive to this). The 401K match also seems pretty average.

Yoe? That’s a very low L4 fb offer.

Google coastn Dec 17, 2019

What's your YOE? The reason ppl love G is many teams have great WLB. Lots of people work remotely to deal with limited vacation. I've heard FB is much worse for WLB.

VMware vLol Dec 17, 2019

I've always heard Google doesn't like wfh / remote, what has your experience been? Are there certain orgs / products where remote is accepted?

Google coastn Dec 18, 2019

Extended remote work is usually difficult to do. However, working remotely 1-2 days here and there is pretty OK. Imagine you have 3 vacations, 5 days each. Work remotely on both travel days for each vacation. That's an extra 6 days. Very doable if you're on top of your stuff IMO

I’d go Facebook because I keep hearing fb culture is a major high pressure rat race. Google is pretty fantastic imho

You'd go to Facebook because of high pressure? Or you meant you'd go to Google?

Amazon stonks📈 Dec 17, 2019

Google offer is valid for a year. Go try FB, if you don’t like it - go to google ;)

Apple popcult Dec 17, 2019

Is it still valid if u do the team match and then don’t take it ? I heard they low ball you more if u go back

CBRE hHdp45 OP Dec 17, 2019

around 5 years experience

Facebook Tech_MBA Dec 17, 2019

You can’t go wrong either way. If you want to make some serious impact, I would go with Facebook- Also, the culture here is better than the hype. It really is a great place to work.

I think I would quit Blind for the first half. Afraid of the negative here would morph my view of what’s really going on.

Facebook Tech_MBA Dec 17, 2019

I’m living through it daily. But once you become an employee and you see just how transparent leadership is with us FB employees, you won’t care what everyone has to say. Inbox me if you take the FB offer so we can connect in real life. Haha

Wait how is their 401K match average? Isn't it 50% match upto IRS max.

CBRE hHdp45 OP Dec 17, 2019

Oh I thought it was 50% match up to $9K max (so I thought the match would be around $4500 for your $9K contribution), I guess I misunderstood.

So if we put in 18k, they gonna match 9k? Total 27k?

Was it difficult to get matched to a team for Google NYC?

Microsoft LoLG77 Dec 17, 2019

How long did team matching take with Google? I was under the impression NYC was very unlikely if you’re not L5+? FB can get a lot higher for L4, keep negotiating with them.

CBRE hHdp45 OP Dec 18, 2019

I haven't matched yet...it was pretty bad timing since I left for a two week vacation a week after I got news that the hiring committee said yes and now it's the middle of holiday season so probably won't get matched until January. I had one call and we both thought it wasn't a good fit.

Two Sigma lotn Dec 18, 2019

How'd you get an offer from G before team match?

Google thfhjv Dec 18, 2019

Think refreshers at E4 would dwarf those at E3. Keep in mind promo is a long and painful process. Surprised by the low E4 offer though. But would assume you would be able to negotiate it up by quite a bit.
