Facebook M2 vs M1? Interview diffs? Job diffs?

Mar 22, 2021 9 Comments

I’ve got an upcoming interview for M1 _or_ M2 at Facebook. I guess they like to dangle that higher TC (and, I assume, responsibility) in front of you.

Does any one have any tips on what FB looks for that pushes one toward M2 over M1? What’s makes an M2?

What is an M2’s day2day like? How does the job itself differ from an M1?

Any (relevant, lol) info welcome.

Pretty easy, M2 is a manager of managers. M1 manages ICs.

  • Is it a fair assessment that a candidate's performance in their non-technical interviews about ppl management/culture drive an M2 signal?

  • A director at FB manages anywhere from 50-100 directs and as an M2, you will be managing a significant portion of those directs.

It may include high level IC (6+) as well as 2 or more medium size teams and their products.

You are responsible for setting the direction of a small pillar, or a product group.

You will mostly interface with other senior directors, VPs and partners of related team and is responsible for the all engineering aspects related to those teams, including setting up expectations, building new teams, setup pillar/product group roadmap and responsible for measuring them and delivering them.

And those are not even the full responsibility, managers have very challenging axes that are outside of your control such as internal surveys (pulse score), better engineering, etc

    • M2 bar at FB is quite high. The difference is in your experiences you can talk through. Org structure, health, conflicts, failures, management philosophy - all should be a clear level above M1..

M2 is very hard to land, but if you’re explicit about pushing for it they can get directors on your loop that can make the call. I’ve never seen a M1 loop lead to a M2 hire without additional rounds from leadership.
