What should I expect? Any tips? Would I be more likely to be hired after the event or are these pretty open?
Same chance as if you didnt attend the event
Depends on the event. There's a manager meet and greet coming up soon. What you should expect is to meet people from other companies, chat with them about common problems, go out of your comfort zone to talk to people you wouldn't normally chat with, etc... Same as any other networking event. The recruiters or managers will reach out to you afterward to see if you are interested in continuing the conversation.

Google CFO confirms 'large-scale' layoffs (Apr 17)
Expect them to be arrogant as fuck and schedule calls with you and miss them, then get pissed when you tell them you went with another organization.
That's sad to hear you had such a bad experience... I've had bad recruiting experiences at FB, Google and Oracle... Kind of par for the course.
