Facebook Signing Bonus Payback

In my contract it states that I must repay a pro-rated amount of my signing bonus if I leave before I hit the 1 year mark. Has anyone done this? Does Facebook enforce this?

They’ll probably take what they can out of your last paycheck

The last paycheck would be considerably less than what I would need to pay back.

I’m sure they enforce it. What I’m curious of is whether you’d have to pay back the gross amount (prorated of course) or the net amount (after taxes). Looking to leave early?

Unfortunately you pay back gross amount. I have done that before

And no you cannot deduce it from income to adjust taxes

I can’t imagine it would be gross. If you leave the day you join, you’d be paying them a profit. And maybe. Golden handcuffs, though.

https://www.dickinsonlaw.com/blogs-articles/iowa-tax-cafe-blog/2016/08/19/employee-repayment-of-compensation Looks like if you leave within the same year you have to pay the net amount but if it’s in the subsequent year (which I’m assuming it is for you since you got the bonus in 2018), you’ll need to repay the net plus income tax withheld on it- aka more than what you got

You're not repaying more than you got - you're amending your prior tax returns

Why would anyone want to leave fb that soon??

Assuming this is rhetorical.

The problem with blind is we cant trust if the OP is really still at fb. He might be a former employee or intern that didnt get an offer or a contractor talking shit.

This is true, can’t believe everything you see

Few people are this dumb to leave in a year given the signing bonus which makes me think the op is not a current fte
