Got an offer for E5 of 350k total comp in Seattle. Have about 10 years of experience in C++ and mobile development. Dream about moving towards AI/ML. Thinking about joining some ML team (ideally Caffe2, ONNX, etc) at Facebook after the bootcamp, since I can pick any team, AFAIK. Have almost no prior ML exposure, but would love to learn and work hard. Any suggestions? How does that plan sound?
The team has to pick you too. In general it is very hard to get into a ML team without significant prior experience. ML infra teams might be more open to it if you have solid infra background.
Ping me, I work in a infra team with some science stuff. Manager is flexible with people with these kind of interests.
Whatβs infra and what kind of work they do?
AFAIK ML people are pre-allocated, at least all ML people in my bootcamp cohort were. That said, so far my impression is that nothing is impossible career-wise as long as you can convince people that you will be able to do the work.
I have seen a lot of unallocated folks coming thru the ML pipeline.
You're not up to par to be an E5 working on ML/AI. Work on another team and teach yourself the basics then transfer after a year.
Do an awesome job on bootcamp tasks
For E5 boot camp task is less relevant. I care much more about what direction you can provide.
Make sense. But what kind of direction I could then provide? Make Caffe2 shine on mobile devices, for example?
