Facebook bootcamp to switch domain?

Mar 11, 2018 16 Comments

Got an offer for E5 of 350k total comp in Seattle. Have about 10 years of experience in C++ and mobile development. Dream about moving towards AI/ML.

Thinking about joining some ML team (ideally Caffe2, ONNX, etc) at Facebook after the bootcamp, since I can pick any team, AFAIK. Have almost no prior ML exposure, but would love to learn and work hard. Any suggestions? How does that plan sound?

To be honest, we do not even consider someone without significant prior ML experience.

I do imagine it'll depend somewhat on the team. There are some where they'll have ML-lite-ish type roles -- you'll mostly be pipelining data but will probably get the chance to train a classifier or two.

Getting exposed to the deep stuff will be mostly on your own time, but it'll be a chance to get some exposure. (In particular I'm thinking of integrity teams here.)

The team has to pick you too. In general it is very hard to get into a ML team without significant prior experience. ML infra teams might be more open to it if you have solid infra background.

AFAIK ML people are pre-allocated, at least all ML people in my bootcamp cohort were.

That said, so far my impression is that nothing is impossible career-wise as long as you can convince people that you will be able to do the work.

I have seen a lot of unallocated folks coming thru the ML pipeline.

Ping me, I work in a infra team with some science stuff. Manager is flexible with people with these kind of interests.

What’s infra and what kind of work they do?

You're not up to par to be an E5 working on ML/AI. Work on another team and teach yourself the basics then transfer after a year.
