Friends from FB please help. Starting in early Dec, I wonder if it's possible to request delaying the sign-on bonus payout until January, for tax purposes. Has anyone done anything like this who can offer some advice? Thanks!
Why Dec? You will lose out on entire Google bonus!
yeah...thanks for pointing this out. thought a lot about it. It's becoming really hard coming to work knowing will be leaving soon. Feeling like wasting time....
AFAIK you get paid the sign on bonus after the first month.
If you delay setting up your payroll, it might be deposited late. But the W2 might still show it as part of this financial year. My suggestion is to not worry about taxes. Pay at Facebook rises reasonably fast, so your income next year is likely going to be much higher (unless you had a windfall this year)
Thanks for the insight Avr1UsK. Do you mind explaining a bit why the W2 might still show as part of 2018 even if it's paid/deposited in 2019?(sorry not really knowledgeable about these things) I expect my income in 2019 will be much less than 2018, because there will be only 3 out of 4 rsu vestings for me in 2019 if I join in Dec. (will miss out the 1st quarter vesting).
Google: constructive receipt doctrine
How much is your signing bonus ?
They have the option to split it into 2. One in your first paycheck, the other after a year. Your recruiter can make the change.
Thanks for the info Amazonia. 2nd one coming a year later sounds a bit too much tho... But it does sound like worth a chat with the recruiter.
Just move start date e to Jan. Problem solved!
Are you optimizing for taxes?
Btw, customary : Yoe and TC?
I did the same at a former company, can’t hurt to ask.
