Recently had an interview at Facebook for a management position (tech track). I think it is worth sharing that experience. Interview was with some director of XYZ department (does not matter). Let's start with the fact that the interviewer yawned first time about 5 mins into the conversation. He continued doing that pretty much until we parted. The questions were very typical, describe the time when... Blah. At some point he seemed to be upset that I haven't had an experience of when I had a conflict between me and a next level manager (i don't consider healthy heated discussions as conflicts). When I suggested I could talk about a hypothetical scenario - he laughed. (I felt like it was "You have not seen life, kid" type of response ..though I am pretty sure we were same age). He moved onto the next question... The funniest part was at the end when I flipped the tables and asked him: now when I described you all my experiences especially in connection to promoting people , how do they compare to FB practices?! He really didn't expect that sort of question and just mumbled something like "similar". Then I asked him to describe his career progression at FB. His answer was "The group was over 100 people and they needed to split it so they made me a manager". :)) Then I tried to stick to a professional continuation ..."But by that time I assume you have already had a track record of successful projects..." His answer: "Not really". End of the interview. Today I received a NO from them. I am glad I won't be working at FB for that department. I really hope this was just a bad day/manager and FB is not like that.
Was this the only interview? How was the tech portion of it?
Which role was this for - M1 ? Was this the initial screening ?
The initial interview
I am afraid answering you have never had a conflict with your manager is a red sign , or at least that’s not the answer they expect
I just got a no from google, I would love to work for google so I am disappointed but In the grand scheme of things it may be a good thing as I did not like the manager and head of practice I interviewed with, they came of uninterested and rude. I would have been reporting to them.
This was totally the opposite of my M1 experience. Only one of my interviewers was "meh" and that was because it was a system design round and I had far more experience than the interviewer. Other than that, it was a great back and forth with interviewers, including the one VP involved. After the interview and an offer was inbound, I met with hiring manager and a director informally for a q&a session. They were great and a big part of the reason I'm leaning towards taking the FB role.
Let me guess you are Indian and the mofo interviewing you was Indian too
Lol I would have laughed during that last part. Like really dude?
Yawning and scoffing is just unprofessional. Tho I'd consider "healthy discussions/disagreements" as "conflicts" in the interview setting. Competing parties advocating for engineering quality vs sprint deliverables could be an example of conflict. It doesn't mean yelling and stepping on each other's toes imo
I had a similar experience at aws....it wasn't a big deal to me because it made me realize that my experience and persona did not make me a good fit for them.
