I am finishing up my Facebook SWE summer internship and I have been informed I will be receiving a full time new grad offer. I haven't been given the official offer details yet but based on winter intern offers I expect the offer to be as follows: $118K base + $160K RSUs + $50K signing bonus If my ratings are good enough (though I think it's unlikely) the numbers could go up to: $220K RSUs + $75K signing bonus I am in the fortunate position to be interning for Google in the fall. But there is about a .005% chance that I can extend FB offer long enough to overlap. Notably, this year Google is not asking interns to re-interview, which I think improves my odds of a return offer. I prefer Google for many reasons: - Better WLB reputation (I have caretaking responsibilities for some family members in ill health so this is very important to me) - Better brand (This is also pretty important to me. I seriously considered more of a nonprofit or social work career. I feel kind of gross about Facebook as a company and don't really use its products. I feel like the company has a net negative impact on the world.) - Better engineering (at least, by reputation, but I have heard it from many sources including at FB so I believe it. This also feels very important to me. I want to think long term about how to become the best engineer, and I want to learn best practices) On the other hand: - FB is an offer in hand. - FB allows new grads to work 100% remote. I can't move (due to aforesaid caretaking responsibilities) and I am not sure Google would give me the location I want or need. - FB allows new grads to pick whatever team they want (mostly) so I could try to pick a team with better WLB or purpose. - FB probably pays more, but this doesn't matter that much to me. - FB promotes faster, but this doesn't matter that much to me. If I waited for Google I would continue to interview around. I am not too worried about not getting any offer at all in the end. #offers #facebook #google #faang
Google is a damn retirement home for engineers. As a new grad, the amount of responsibility you get early in your career from FB makes it a clear winner.
If Google gives you a location that requires moving, can you move? If so, wait for Google. If moving is absolutely out of the question, take FB.
Moving is pretty out of the question. Yes, Google frustratingly gives a lot less control over location and team matching as far as I know.
Google will make you move. Team matching is also notoriously long. I am pretty sure big G is against new grad remote position. Take the FB job. Your responsibilities outside work are way more important. Plus, it's not like FB is not a good company all things considered.
Take the opportunity at FB (which is a great opportunity by the way). Stay there for 2 years and try a promotion in this meanwhile (usually easier for less senior roles). Then you can move to whatever company you like later on with a higher TC and a possibly a promotion. I might be wrong, but I believe experience as SWE role may sound better than extra months of a second internship in your resume.
Take the FB opportunity and work remote. I rarely see anyone on here prioritizing looking after a loved one over TC. Kudos to you for that Once your personal circumstances improve (I am praying that they do very soon), you can always switch to Google. FB gives you the remote flexibility and the ability to work on a team that gives you some purpose. Take the FB role and you can always switch to Google at a later point.
First, congratulations on your Facebook offer. Second, I hope your personal circumstances improve soon. Third and last — FB isn’t that evil a place to tbh. I don’t work there. But looks like luck is not on their side. That’s the reason for a lot of bad press. It’s easy to blame them for everything. People on their platforms are responsible for the information they consume. Ofc fake news is a really hard problem to solve, and it’s not easy even for a giant like them. As per data collection, lots of other companies collect data. You’ll be surprised, at some point Target knew a customer is pregnant by their buying habits even before the customer did. So that is more creepy 😉 FB has some great engineers( I read their Distributed Systems papers) and also view their blogs regularly. You’ll learn a lot. All the best! May the force be with you.
Can you elaborate on that? This was a concern for me. A reputation for writing hacky, untested and badly documented code? Or being a jerk? Or something else?
