OK Team Blind, need some advice on how to proceed. Got an initial offer from FB NYC for E5. I have 15+ YOE in the industry, am coming from a small startup. Recruiter said I did really well in the interview, and one of my interviewers reached out to me with a really nice email just to say what's up and that they are excited to work with me. Here's the skinny: My current comp at the startup is around 160K cash + 1% seed stage equity (as options, not grant, half of that is vested already). FB E5 Offer 170K base 25,500 yearly bonus (15% assuming "meets expectations", more if exceeds) 400K RSUs, over 4 years, no cliff No sign on bonus. I asked about the sign on bonus, and mentioned that all the research I've done indicated that a sign on bonus is somewhat standard. He said it is "very rare", especially in NYC, and that my research is probably skewed by Menlo Park. This sounds wrong to me. I don't have any competing offers at the moment, but I am in the process with a few other companies - a couple of smaller companies, a couple that are larger. Probably nothing where I can get an offer within a week. Besides, I would much rather work at Facebook than any of those other companies. I'm fine with the base+bonus+equity. Maybe I can get a little more there, but really the sign-on bonus would help. The startup equity I have is hard to value, but if they ever get acquired it could be worth a lot, and I would most likely be losing all of it if I leave now. Besides, although I don't have an competing offer in hand, there are other companies out here - Google, Dropbox, Bloomberg, are the bigger names, lots of smaller ones that can move fast. So basic question: What's up with FB Sign on bonuses for E5 in NYC. Is this "very rare" stuff BS?
Fb is known to give big signon just like amazon
This is kinda low for 15 yoe NYC. Not to split hairs but $300k/y sounds more accurate.
300 base or 300 tc. Cause this tc is 300 tc
Do you mean 300K not including RSUs? The offered base + bonus + equity comes out to $295,500/yr. This is the same offer as this person (https://www.teamblind.com/article/Facebook-offer-maYUp7OA) *except* for the lack of signing bonus.
400K RSUs???
Yes, over 4 years, so 100K per year. Vests each quarter, no 1 year cliff.
For sure a lack of a competing offer is hurting me. The truth is I wasn't really on a big time job search, they found me, I prepped a bit, and interviewed. Other than no other offer, I'm kind of wondering if these things are working against me: 1) Not coming from a big company 2) Self-taught programmer - no CS/Engineering/Math type degree (I understand this makes a difference at Google) Is it worth it to try and stall while I interview at a couple of other places? My old boss works at Bloomberg...
Not sure if they work against you but they might. For me both #1 and #2 hold true. But I had competing so good ammo to negotiate with. Honestly it’s up to you. If you will be happy when you join with this TC and not worry about what everyone else your level is earning, just take it, enjoy it and focus on working hard. If it’s gonna eat you up that it _might_ be lower than others at your level and YOE just try pushing back for time.
Thanks for the great reply @Dbyg21. I’m perfectly fine with the TC overall. A little bit extra at the front would help defray some transition expenses, such as day care during boot camp, a week off between the jobs, etc. honestly, a little bit would go a long way, and besides, if pushing things back a week can get an extra few grand, it is worth it.
What questions did they ask you? Did you do both a phone screen and on-site?
Hi. Had 2 questions medium level in the phone screen. Onsite was more involved. 4 sessions (keep in mind I am a mobile dev) Career and coding - career questions took so much time we didn’t get to a coding question. Coding - recursive “minesweeper” style question Coding - more mobile specific Design - design a messenger style app, focus on mobile end and api, assume you’ll be working with a crack backend team
I am from NYC and will be joining FB this month. The recruiter told me the same thing when I asked for sign on
Did you have competing offers ?
I take it you weren’t successful with the signing bonus? Anyway, congrats, maybe we’ll be in boot camp together!
What's your role at the startup ?
Lead iOS Engineer. Have been a “lead” mobile dev for about 5 years, and “Senior” for 3 years before that.

Sounds like BS. You could probably get 30k+ signon if you get a competing offer.
