Have a system design interview with Facebook shortly and I SIMPLY CANNOT get my damn whiteboard to not shine and be visible on my macbook's webcam. :(

I haven't played around with excalidraw much and I can't understand how to navigate it.

Any pointers? I have a tiny refrigerator whiteboard, which I can place on my table, draw on and periodically hold it up in front of the camera to show it to the interviewer. Would this be acceptable?

  • I interviewed for FB recently.

Use exclaidraw to draw a real diagram before your interview. Treat that exercise like it’s live. By the time you’re done with that, you’ll be in good shape.

I was told that you can also use your own notebook/whiteboard if you prefer. Just use a dark marker - as long as your interviewer can see it, it’s fine. No specific advice on how to reduce glare, sorry.

My recommendation - practice with excalidraw as above, it’s a decent tool. Use the number keys to quickly switch shapes, take advantage of copy/paste as well. Don’t sweat making a “pretty” drawing - lay it out logically and they’ll get the point.

You can select 9 for the library objects and then click “browse libraries” to browse public user-created shapes.

I was tempted to save a whole pre-made system diagram for a web app, save it to the library and plop it on the canvas for my interview, but I figured that wouldn’t go over well.

If ur hell bent on using the whiteboard, try some Webcam software which might help to auto adjust exposure/contrast.
