Been at Amazon for 6+ years. 8 years as SDM.

I failed an M1 at FB. Trying to piece together what could have gone wrong. Felt like maybe the interviewers had to probe too much to get me to understand their design questions.

What are the most common reasons to fail M1 loop? I felt really well prepared for coding, people management and projects so I'm wondering if SD or Jedi I failed somehow.

When can I try again?

I wouldn’t view it as a failure, it’s just a very competitive position. Equivalent to IC6. Not a lot of folks come in at that level either.

Are you saying external M1s are rare? The recruiter simply said they weren't moving forward, no indication if was beat out for the position or way off base. I would expect if I did well but wasn't a fit or they found a better candidate for the team my recruiter would shop me around?

Just that you may well be qualified (as I was — tried for M1, missed, became IC instead), but there’s a lot of competition for external M1 and frequently folks come to M1 who were senior managers or higher elsewhere.

What percentage of M1 and M2 managers were external hires in Facebook vs internal promos?

I guess you analyzed it yourself because it seems like you and interviewer were not in sync if he had to probe too much. There’s also a lot of luck and timing involved. It’s not the end of the world, tons of roles out there and just have to keep going for it
