Ex Goog here, will be at NeurIPS for a few days. I'm interested in ML Ethics/Fairness and was going to go to some of that workshop before I saw the program... https://mindingthegap.github.io/ Does anyone know why Meredith Whittaker is an invited speaker for this? From what I understand she's never published a peer-reviewed paper in AI, Ethics, or any other field and she lied about her position at Google to get her position at NYU/AINow (I learned this from googlersagainstdeceit.blogspot.com and verified it by internal Google search). Does she really have that kind of credibility in this area from actual researchers (not journalists), and if so...why?
Because she runs AI now institute... and that place is big in ethics in AI
Update, I didn’t look into the link you sent. I didn’t know anything about it. Reading about it now
Ok, here’s a question. Not that I’m taking sides but... there are reports from several organizations which are not peer reviewed. How can we take them. For example, that report of McKinsey where they looked at AI trends in 2019 - that wasn’t peer reviewed. So, why should anybody pay attention to it? Of course I’m not putting Meredith and McKinsey in the same bucket but making an argument here about the limits of peer reviewed avenues in driving home a point. As far as that blogpost is concerned, that was a great read. Only confirms my worst opinions about her. Formalizing ones personal ideology in terms of reports is the worst form of research
That's a good point. I'd probably be inclined to trust McKinsey because they're McKinsey but maybe take it with a grain of salt if it was clear the report was favoring a certain company that maybe they were working for. McKinsey has a very high reputation for objectivity . With AINow, I haven't read their whole report tbh but the fact she made up her Google titles lose a lot of credibility in my eyes, and her Twitter feed is anything but objective. That's not to say the criticisms of the report in the link were objective either though, and it def wasn't very thorough

I haven’t done shit today!
Flagged for hate speech.
Why. Is this a joke, do you see calling out academic dishonesty as hate speech, or does something else about this strike you as hateful? My intention is not hate and this is not a joke
Yes, joking. :) Though you had better not complain about it openly!
