I was just thinking that people usually talk about having better negotiations and in some cases only possibility of negotiation in case one has a competing offer. Let's take an example: assume I am negotiating at Google (this is the company I am interested to join). Google is known to low-ball in case no competing offers. If now I verbally mention that I have offer from Apple with certain numbers (higher than what Google is offering and what I am looking for) So where is the catch? Why would I need to clear multiple interviews at a different company just so that I can negotiate well at another company. #tech #offer #negotiateoffer

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
I did that and extracted 50K more from Amazon. Please don’t use company name and say a major service provider or e-commerce player or social media giant. To be fair, I was in last stages with another company but didn’t have their offer in hand and had no intention of joining that company.
I’ve considered this, but I’m worried they’d ask for offer letter proof. I know you could always say it’s verbal and they’re refusing to give a written offer but what are the chances of that backfiring?
The only thing that can happen is that the company will call your bluff and stay with their offer. After investing so much time in recruiting, everybody wants to get the process over with. Also, if I am hiring for L6 or L7 and like the candidate, I will get the the exception to meet the salary ask. For junior levels, I am less inclined to.
Google needs screenshots of the competing offer in order to match it. It sucks and is unethical, but they don't budge unless you provide that.
Has it happened with someone?
Basically it seems to me if one is willing to risk a bit, like missing out on the offer from the desired company then this can be done
Am in WA and Google asked for email proof of competing offer.
Since mostly everyone has gmail account I’m sure Google doesn’t need to verify competing offers from you.
Focus on better negotiation techniques instead.
Agree, but after a stage nothing else seems to work with recruiters other than competing offers
Lie once and you have to make up 100 lies to cover it.
I’ve done it before but you can’t do it with G. Know who you are trying to get in bed with and do your research. G asks for proof
How about Apple? Do they ask for proof?
Not as far as I know. They are difficult to negotiate with though (depending on the recruiter you get) so they might.
How about microsoft? Do they ask for proof
No they don't
I told them I had one and I really do, they ghosted me. Fuckers
You can tell Google to suck a d😲. Most companies won’t send you an offer until you verbally accept it, so use that to your advantage.
Yup. I did not get a written offer until I accepted the verbal offer at Thumbtack.
Thumbtack sucks bro, they rejected me after beautiful very positive happy cheeriful 20 minute initial chat with recuiter with the message ' we decided to move with a better candidate'. Interestingly how do they know that I am worse candidate?
When I got offers I told them honestly that I was still in negotiations with other companies and would take a couple days to consider the whole package tc and everything. They definitely pressured me to say whether it was a good offer or not. There’s a lot of tips online about negotiations. The biggest thing to do it’s give yourself some time to think it over. The time might be enough for them to outbid themselves
I recently accepted an offer at a big4 accounting firm and did this. I was waiting for almost 2 weeks and I emailed the recruiter stating I had another offer and wanted to get theirs so I could make an educated decision. I had no other offer but they called me later that day and extended me an offer. I didnt use it to negotiate but I feel like it at least made them offer me sooner. Never asked any specifics.
