I got a full time offer from my previous google internship team to join as a PMM L5 and have another role as PM for a non fang company. Which one do I choose? While I loved PMM as an intern and Goog culture, I have not explored product management and curious about it. Google said they wouldn’t consider me as a PM for I have a non engineering background albeit from a top tier university and an mba from a top tier again but 3 yoe work experience in sales. I am interested in long term career growth and making it to the c level or founding a company sometime down the line. Looking for genuine career advice than a mere choice. TC is actually about the same for both roles (~250k)
Congratulations! So are you an MBA intern ? Curious as to how you managed to do an internship for L5 PMM job.
I had work experience before with another fang, maybe that helped? I know a lot of folks joining as L5 actually, and didn’t think it was uncommon.
In my experience, the PMM function is not well-respected at Google. They don't own the product like PMs. And they don't have measurable impact like other marketing functions.
Can any @google PMMs chip in? Is transitioning ladders easy at google? The recruiter says folks switch ladders all the time but depends on perf.
Switching to PM ladder at Google is not guaranteed success (probably <50% success rate). And folks who are successful are almost always downleveled.
Thanks kaamchor but I want kaam with only you
They are 2 very different roles at L5. At Square, PMM has a ton of impact and co owns roadmap with PM. PM and PMM both share a trajectory ladder of GM over product though by L7. Just depends how you want to get there and what interests you. Every company is different though. If you think you are more interested in PM then it is worth at least trying, otherwise you may regret it later.
PM for CEO or Entrepreneur track since you own the product. PMM only if you are passionate about it. Btw.. congrats on the offer! L5 for recent MBA grad is usually difficult
Thank you! I didnt know it was difficult. In fact didn’t most post mba salaries at fang start out at 350k+ TC? (source - blind)
No they don't unless you count joining bonus.
PM at google is around ~300 to 400k for fresh mbas assuming they have relevant work experience. Also we mostly hire folks with cs background or at least my org, and the salaries tend to be at par with e4 and e5
I interned at AWS as a Product Manager Technical (l6) and have a return offer. I worked on on of the compute products and am super interested in working on Kubernetes. I have a CS undergrad and 5 yrs work ex as a developer before my MBA. What's the best way to apply for the PM openings at Google? I'd received an internship interview call for the TAM position which I'd turned down because I'd already accepted the Amazon offer.
What's the TC breakdown for Amazon? Is it still 135K base, 250k RSU(over 4 years), 100K joining bonus?
If you want to be a PM, the earlier you can be a PM the better.
