Hear me out: I have said this multiple times on different instances, that I get ads for products on Instagram or Fb if I mention their names even when the apps are closed. Recently I have been noticing ads even when I read about a product in an altogether different app. Point in case: there was a post about a guy mentioning how he feels poor for not owning a Canada Goose jacket, and someone there mentioned about this brand called “Moncler”. I have never heard about it, I didn’t read out the brand name aloud or searched about it, the very next minute I got an ad on Instagram!! What the heck!? How is this possible! If someone has the time and resources, please look into it more, it’s potentially worth hundreds millions of dollars in lawsuit. TC: Not enough to afford Canada Goose jackets.
If you are using same email address on that site and Facebook, then the site can share this information with Facebook and Facebook knows which account to associate the information with (and show you relevant advertisement). You can turn off third party ads in Facebook I believe! I think Google does the same.
Blind doesn’t have the same email address as my Ig and Fb account sir/madam.
Email address was an example. It can be any information that can help determine that the account belong to same person. E.g., if both services know you work at google and have enough confidence that the account belong to same person!
I've seen this happen several times. Fb says it just happens to find that ad for you and no speech is involved.
Balls lol “happens to find the ad”. Yeah right! Happens to find the exact same product’s as which I just read about on another app or spoke about! (Not angry at you, just Fb)
Watching a Googler and Facebooker squabble over who is more invasive with data is like watching Trump and Rick Perry argue over who is best in a spelling contest.
If I could give a 100k likes I would!!!
Can you please send me your ldap@ so that I can tell your manager that you're an idiot? Look up how cookies, device fingerprinting and targeting works.. Essentially any site with a like button is sending your id back to Facebook. Facebook has amazing models that can figure out from a site url which products and brands you're interested in. Instagram uses the same models as as Facebook.
Pardon my ignorance but how does a plain text on another app become the means of “device fingerprinting” and “targeting”? Cookies on mobile apps? Never heard of it.
Since you’re being such a d*ck about it, can you please read my post again? I didn’t say “website”, I said mobile app. And Blind and Fb apps aren’t connected in anyway.
Apps that listen when closed are common. Google and FB both do it. I'll talk to someone about a product and the next minute a YouTube ad will play regarding it.
Please don't join his ignorant baseless accusation - this is simply not true (and it is nor really that hard to disprove. There is a reason why despite the many millions of dollars in potential upside if one was to proves this tip be true, no one had done it...
Funny how people are surprised by this... 😂
I would assume it's gathered when you allow camera and microphone permissions (as we do on Android). I had the same thing happen to me with a chandelier ad through Instagram Stories. We were talking about a chandelier at work and then I got the ad. No way that's pure algorithm
Yes talking is one thing, I have gotten over the fact that they are listening, this is cross-app boundary crossing sh*t you see? Just a simpler text on Blind and I get its ad!
Nothing is collected when you do that... Yes, it is an algorithm and the likely explanation is either that you were shown the chandelier ad before but havent noticed until you started caring or the reverse - seeing chandeliers ads caused you to talk about it (yeah, advertisement actually works despite people thinking they are smarter than this) Fb doesnt take audio sources for ad targeting like that either directly or from 3rd party. It is illegal and it isnt worth as much as it sounds.
May be your friend searched for it and since you both are friends in fb and if you both had turned on location sharing, fb can predict that you will be interested in coats too based on your friend search for this brand and you both meeting recently and you living in a cold area. I had same experience with youtube too, me and my friend were talking about a traditional food recipe in a non English language and next hour youtube recommended me the video. So I highly doubt if both apps are listening. Frankly if both fb and youtube can listen to your conversation that better alexa would not be the best selling voice assistant
Woah! That’s some next level shit!
Our ads predict your behavior well, they don’t listen to your phone-same as you guys
Rather than shying away from your shady ass business practice, man up and stay on topic?
@6Feet How is that not on topic response? Also, if you call ad targeting a "shady ass practice", I have some news for you
