Recently had a new grad phone interview with FB. The interviewer gave me a leetcode hard question. After some discussion, I was able to code up the solution very quickly with plenty of time to spare. The interviewer told me that I did well and my solution was excellent. Then, instead of going over test cases or follow up questions, the interviewer joked about how nervous I got haha and gave me some good tips for interviewing. At the end, she even wished me good luck. I really thought I had a good performance but I got rejected the next day. Did my interviewer lie to me? Should I follow up with my recruiter to ask for more specific feedback and mention what my interviewer said, or just move on? :(
Did you panic a lot?
Yea I think this might be the reason, there was a communication issue since she wasnt a native english speaker and I couldn’t understand what she was saying some of the time. At one point, she even yelled at me NO for mishearing what she said and I def panicked under the environment
Shit happens. Try not to panic next time. What’s the worst that can happen?
The nervous / gave good tips part made me think she already made a reject decision. Did interview actually go as well as you thought? How much time was left after finish? There's usually always buffer time for Q&A.
There were about 15 mins left after I finished my solution. She spent 5-10 giving me tips then saved the rest of the time for me to ask questions
Dude you failed. 5-10 minutes hint means you bombed. If it's on leetcode, most people have probably seen it before and they could do it with no help at all.
99% it wasn’t hard.
Did you put your code to LeetCode and check if it is even working ? May be you were making very basic mistake and she got judgmental about it ?????
Move on. I know this is hard to hear right now, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Maybe if you cracked the interview you would've ended up in a toxic team, project that gets shut down, with a bad manager etc...I know of a lot of folks in this situation. They stick to it and are extremely unhappy to the point of having mental and physical health issues. It happens more often then you think. When you interview just make your end goal finding a good team and project. That's what will really help your career.
Who knows? Maybe someone with a PhD from MIT came in and blew them away right after you got off the phone. Interviewing is like playing a game against opponents you can't see. Just focus on what you can improve and you'll get em next time around
Solid answer.
I can tell you, one strong hire does not mean hire. So many times ppl do not get offer because there is one person in loop who is not positive for you plus some concerning data points here and there from other interviewers.
Which leetcode hard was it? Remove invalid parens, integer to English, or another one?
What is the question number on leetcode ?
