Curious how you would rate a person that can’t take on as much workload because they have kids vs. a person that is single or no kids. The ones in the latter category may have bandwidth to do a lot more and get a higher rating. On the contrary a manager may feel the one with kids is doing great (but less) and get a great rating due to their home circumstance. What is a fair comparison when rating.

You'd be surprised... Definitely the ones with a family are busier BUT they tend to have their sh*t together (in terms of getting sh*t done) and are able to have a higher output than some individuals with no family because of it.

Parents seem to have another level of seriousness when it comes to work. There is a lot more on the line. Definitely depends on the individual

  • I'm a manager and I do assess people performance only on factual results without taking into account anything else (family, gender, ethnic, age, ....)
That being said, when I have to manage a low performer, I try to assess the risk of another half of bad performance and I do take into account everything I know including personal situation

That is a good way to think about it. Sometimes I feel it can get skewed because I hear the person constantly talk about their family and kids, the time it takes to bring them to events etc etc. and may ask to not give them anymore work. As to imply give it to the single person.

why is this even a question? so if I decide to not have kids, I have to work harder than my colleagues who do? The reason one doesn't want kids is to have more free time anyways

Well considering I make my kids learn how to code and once they know enough I just have them work on my tasks so I can triple my workload... So yeah my coworkers without kids have to work 3x harder to keep up

It doesn’t matter if you are single or have 5 kids . Everyone should be rated by the same criteria
